In Wallonia, biomethanization is a discreet but strategic pillar of the energy transition. Less visible than solar or wind power, it nevertheless plays a key role thanks to the production of local renewable energy, the recovery of organic waste, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, and the strengthening of the region's energy independence. A real lever at the crossroads of energy, agriculture, and the circular economy, the sector has significant potential to respond to regional climate and economic challenges. To better understand its mechanisms and prospects,Valbiomoffers insights structured around ten questions on the challenges and development of biomethanization in Wallonia.

In line with this dynamic, the 2026 Biomethanization Tour kicks off with a first stage devoted to the energy recovery of sewage sludge. Aimed at local authorities, project leaders, and water and energy stakeholders, this morning event aims to deepen understanding of biomethanization processes, discover a site in operation, and fuel reflection on local and sustainable projects. The event will be held on March 11, 2026, at theVallée de la Dyle wastewater treatment plant. Participation is free, but registration is required, with the supportof Innolab.

In addition, the transition to a circular bioeconomy also requires the development of innovative agricultural sectors. The "long-fiber hemp" training course, organized byValbiomwith Laura Fagnant and Valentine Donck, will hold its final session in Wallonia on March 16, 2026, in Gembloux, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. This training course covers the technical aspects and cultivation process, mechanization, and opportunities related to the natural fiber market. It brings together the key content from previous years, enriched with the latest information. This cycle is part of theInterreg North-West Europe (NWE) Hemp4Circularity project. Registration is free but mandatory.

From energy recovery from sludge to the structuring of sustainable agricultural sectors and the dissemination of technical knowledge, these initiatives illustrate the coherence of a regional strategy based on innovation, circularity, and territorial anchoring.
